Santorini
Beaches
Info
The magnificent beaches of Santorini are
spread out mainly along the eastern and the
south-eastern side of the island. They show
the signs of volcanic activity 3,500 years
ago. Each beach has special characteristics,
which make it unique and outstanding. The
black shining pebbles, the unique land
formations, the black, white and red sand,
make up a impressive landscape. In the
summer, the black sand gets so hot that
you'll have to have a grass mat. Most
beaches are well organized featuring the
option of lounging chairs, umbrellas, and
many water sports. The most popular beaches
are: Perissa, Kamari, Monolithos, Perivolos,
Ammoudi and the Red beach.
Perissa Beach
Perissa is one of Santorini best beaches,
situated 15 km southeast of Fira, next to
Emporio village. It has very clean waters
and is one of the most organized Santorini
Beaches. A collection of water sports is
available at Perissa (water skiing,
windsurfing and paddle boats). The single
black lava sand and clear deep blue sea are
the principal attraction. Seafront taverns,
hotels, camping facilities and trees for
shade add to the attraction.
Kamari Beach
The beautiful black sandy beach of Kamari
stretches for five miles in length along the
eastern coast of the island. This beach
hosts massive crowds in the summertime, and
is served by countless restaurants, tavernas,
bars, pizza shacks, vendors, clothing shops,
and lodgings. The beach and its community
bustle day and night. The water turns deep
quickly, and there are great waves. Chairs
and umbrellas are for rent. Restrooms are
only in bars and restaurants. Bus service to
and from Fira is available.
Monolithos Beach
Monolithos beach is located just to north of
kamari at a distance of about 9 km from Fira.
Monolithos is a quiet beach but well
organized, with all kinds of facilities like
sun chairs, umbrellas and different types of
water sports. Here you will find more peace
and quiet than other Santorini beaches,
however with all the comforts of the other
beaches as there are lodges facilities for
snacks and meals available. With its broad
beach of fine black sand and seemingly
endless shallows, Monolithos has inevitably
developed into a family resort.
Perivolos Beach
Perivolos Beach is situated just to south of
Perissa Beach. Wonderful endless beach,
ideal when north winds are blowing with a
little lighter sand than Perissa (dark
grey). It is one of the more frequented
beaches on the island and features an array
of bars, cafés and restaurants, as well as
hotel accommodation. Perivolos is a grey
sandy and stony beach that features swimmers
and sunbathers, pristine waters, long
chairs, umbrellas and water sport
facilities. This beach of dark sand gets
very hot but is rarely crowded. Like other
beaches on this coast it drops sharply into
the sea so children must take care.
Ammoudi Beach
Amoudi Beach is one of the most charming
Santorini Beaches, located below the village
of Oia (Ia), at the foot of the cliff with
clear blue green water which get deep just
after a few steps (something that families
with children should cautious about), ideal
for endless hours of relaxation and
recreation. Ammoudi features several
excellent fish taverns and cafés. Thanks to
its scenic landscape with the implosive
colorful volcanic rocks shadowing the sea it
attracts many visitors. It is accessible by
car through the old pumice stone mines and
by foot or on mules' back via the 214 broad
steps which you have to descend and to
ascend.
Red beach
The red beach is one of the most popular and
beautiful of the beaches of Santorini which
has fine red sand and rocks. It is situated
near the village and ancient site of
Akrotiri. The beach can be reached either by
boat, there are several connecting Red Beach
with Perissa and Akrotiri, or by foot (10
minutes walk from Akrotiri). Red Beach earns
its name from the iron-rich sedimentary
rocks in the cliff face towering above you,
as well as the red sand. It is quite
crowded; you can rent an umbrella and a pair
of chaise lounges for 7 euros, though there
is also some good free space nearby that
gets packed by midday. The first few meters
of the water near the shore are quite stony,
so be prepared to step on some stones.
Vlyhada Beach
The most impressive beach on the island,
situated to southern from Santorini, is a
wonderful spot to relax, as it is one of the
less frequented Santorini Beaches. Imposing
white rocks, masterpieces of nature carved
into extraordinary shapes by the winds, as
if Antoni Gaudí had dropped in for a swim
here before designing the Pedrera. Although
it has the usual lounge chairs, canteen and
taverna, the restless waves and rugged rocks
give the place a wild. Before you reach the
beach, you pass the small harbour, which is
full with small traditional boats. Do not
stay surprised if you come across as you are
walking to the beach to one of the many
ducks or the swams that leave there under
the wing of the fishermans. It is a perfect
spot for those wishing to avoid the big
crows.
Vourvoulos Beach
Vourvoulos beach is situated to 7 km on the
North East part of Santorini. The sandy
beach is ideal for relaxation and water is
almost turquoise blue. The best part about
Vourvoulos beach is that it is among the
lesser known beaches of Santorini and as
such it is secluded which provides discreet
privacy to the discerning beach bum. Also,
there is also a small fishing boats harbor
the last years with a fish tavern.
